Director, Regional Development- Midwest Region

For over 78 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, through their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back to their communities, the USO is always by their side.

Today’s USO continuously adapts to the needs of our men and women in uniform and their families, so they can focus on their very important mission. We operate USO centers at or near military installations across the United States and throughout the world, including in combat zones, and even un-staffed USO service sites in places too dangerous for anyone but combat troops to occupy.

The Director, Regional Development is responsible for the successful implementation of fundraising strategies at the field level within the Midwest Region.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties):

  • Reporting to the USO Regional Vice President of Development, Midwest and in coordination with the Executive Director, Illinois; the USO Illinois Board; and USO National Development staff and leadership, the Director, Regional Development will lead corporate, individual, foundation, and regional development initiatives and fundraising strategies for direct-report and chartered USO operations within Illinois and the Midwest Region.*
  • Raise revenue and manage fundraising program activities including but not limited to three major local events, relationship strategy development, prospect identification, solicitation and engagement, proposal development, recognition and appreciation efforts as related to current and new major gift income sources in assigned region.*
  • Contribute to the development and execution of a strategic plan to support and drive short- and long-term major gift relationships, campaigns and fundraising efforts.*
  • Manage and lead Regional Development Manager, Special Events Manager, and Marketing & Communications Manager – in development and execution of a three major local events, strategic development plan for relationship strategy development, prospect identification, solicitation and engagement, proposal development, recognition and appreciation efforts as related to current and new major gift income sources in assigned region.*
  • Manage portfolios of current and prospective individual, corporate and foundation donors with a focus on raising funds from individuals and foundations, corporate gifts, and planned gifts.*
  • Provide additional support to Regional VP of Development, Midwest and National Development Leadership as needed.*
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications:

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Business Administration or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  •  7+ years work experience in individual, foundation, and corporate giving/sponsorship development role. Relevant experience in a non-profit, military, multicultural and/or global organization preferred, 3+ years in a supervisory capacity.
  •  Experience generating $2M+ in major donor revenues for a not-for-profit or charity organization preferred. Personal experience with closing $25,000+ gifts.
  •  Demonstrated ability to manage team members, and reports if in a supervisory role, for high-performance. Ability to achieve desired results while working collaboratively in a team environment.
  •  Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills. Ability to deliver compelling call-to-action cases to internal and external stakeholders at a variety of levels.
  •  Solid knowledge of IRS guidelines for charitable contributions and Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability.
  •  Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to effectively interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels.
  •  Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
  •  Working knowledge of basic business and accounting functions including project management and budgeting.
  •  Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  •  Ability to manage a high volume of assignments with varying complexity and competing priorities in a fast paced environment with integrity and professionalism.
  •  Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communications as well as working knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite and Raiser's Edge.
  •  Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver's license.
  •  Must be a strong advocate of the USO's mission to strengthen our service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country.
