Direct Response Coordinator

Location: Arlington, VA, United States

Since 1941, the USO has been the nationís leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, through their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back to their communities, the USO is always by their side.

Todayís USO continuously adapts to the needs of our men and women in uniform and their families, so they can focus on their very important mission. We operate USO centers at or near military installations across the United States and throughout the world, including in combat zones, and even un-staffed USO service sites in places too dangerous for anyone but combat troops to occupy.

The Direct Response Coordinator reports to the Senior Manager, Donor Retention and Cultivation and supports fundraising campaigns across all Direct Response channels while assisting with project coordination and administrative functions for the team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

  • Contribute to Direct Response initiatives and fundraising campaigns as requested by the VP, Directors and Managers.
  • Become knowledgeable on all Direct Response marketing channels currently part of USOís investment portfolio.
  • Coordinate internal solicitation review (creative approval) process for all Direct Response channels.
  • Support Directors and Managers on Matching Gift Campaigns, ensuring adherence to internal SOPs and that donor stewardship reports are completed in timely manner.
  • Assist in scheduling team meetings. Maintain meeting request and project management tool utilized by team to coordinate key meetings.
  • Lead note taker in Direct Response internal and external meetings.
  • Manage direct mail sample file system.
  • Assist in organizing Direct Response vendor contracts and support annual renewal efforts.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders on annual state reporting and compliance documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelorís Degree in Marketing, Communications or a related field is preferred.
  • 0-2 years of work experience, preferably in a development support role.
  • Organized with well-developed project management skills and time management disciplines.
  • Discretion with sensitive and privileged information.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
  • Limited knowledge of basic business and accounting functions including project management and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  • Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. Working knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driverís license.
  • Must be a strong advocate of the USOís mission to lift the spirits of Americaís troops and their families.


  • This position is located in Arlington, VA. Preference will be given to local candidates within commuting distance to the location.
  • USO locations will adhere to local area and DOD guidelines regarding COVID vaccination/testing requirements. Employees may be required to be vaccinated or tested regularly per local requirements.
