The Sustainer Specialist assists in acquiring new monthly donors, retaining existing monthly donors, and converting single gift donors to monthly donors through various mass market fundraising channels, leads day-to-day production and vendor management, and ensures program adheres to direct marketing growth objectives.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

Program Creation and Execution:

  • Assist manager in partnering with Development leaders to establish sustainer goals and plans for direct marketing and contribute to their execution.*
  • Consistently evaluates and provides recommendations to improve the monthly donor journey to ensure best practices are achieved through acknowledgements, conversion techniques, timing of upgrades, relationship building, and other USO touchpoints from other divisions.*
  • Participate in relevant Direct Response meetings to ensure sustainer campaigns and audiences are supported and integrated across mail and digital channels including USO.org.
  • Assist the manager in leading and project planning of training materials, scripting, and identifying creative assets for the sustainer program which include digital, mail, telemarketing, canvassing and DRTV efforts.
  • Lead the approval process for all sustainer materials with Marketing, Legal, and other applicable USO stakeholders.

Vendor Management:

  • Act as daily point of contact, managing necessary communication frequency with USO canvassing, DRTV, digital, and telemarketing vendors.
  • Led and oversee the successful onboarding and offboarding of vendors.
  • Monitor fulfillment inventories to ensure correct levels are maintained and premiums are fulfilled in a timely manner and reporting provided.*
  • Monitor vendor performance for compliance with contracts and ensure renewal process executes successfully for each contract cycle.

Budget Management:

  • Assist in annual revenue and expense planning, budgeting, and reforecasting efforts for sustainer efforts.*
  • Assist manager in tracking and coding invoices and adhering to the annual budget.*
  • Reporting & Analysis:
  • Complete timely campaign analysis and reporting on sustainer efforts by synthesizing results, summarizing learnings, and recommending optimizations to manager Make recommendations where appropriate. *
  • Assist the team in the creation and reporting of source codes and reporting for sustainer campaigns.
  • Help analyze the USO direct response file health and optimize tactics based on results.*

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, in Marketing, Communications or related field preferred.
  • 3 - 5 years of work experience in a development or fundraising role within a direct mail or email program in the commercial or charitable sectors.
  • Campaign planning experience including retention and cultivations strategies, loyalty programs and segmentation planning.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards governing direct mail, email, solicitation operations.
  • Experience working with strategic vendors, print houses, and caging facilities preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and organization skills. Ability to interact with different departments, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
  • Working knowledge of basic business functions including project management.
  • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  • Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. Working knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver’s license.
  • Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families.
