The Director, Mission Immersion is responsible for short- and long-term direction and planning of high-profile mission immersion events that support cultivation and stewardship for high value donor prospects, corporate executives, donors, and board/council members.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

  • Oversee full-cycle event planning for a wide variety of high-profile USO mission immersion events including but not limited to identifying event goals, objectives and requirements, site/vendor selection and management, promotion/marketing strategies, event implementation, and post-event evaluation.*
  • Develop, oversee, and manage execution of mission immersion events budgets and contractual agreements. *
  • Cultivate and steward key audiences including funders, senior military, elected officials, entertainers and USO field and volunteer leadership.*
  • In coordination with cross-departmental leadership, develop and implement short- and long-term mission immersion event strategies that result in procurement and growth of financial and other in-kind resources necessary to support USO operations. Depending on the event, the goals are a combination of 1) stewarding key relationships 2) raising funds and 3) building brand equity. *
  • Assist in conceiving and advocating for highly engaging and mutually supportive mission immersion-oriented special events designed to appeal to USO’s priority audiences.*
  • Work closely and build key relationships with the VP, Council Relations and Field Development and other operations, development, and special events staff to design and plan mission immersion events that will provide meaningful engagement opportunities to Council members, donors or potential donors, and others as desired.*
  • Develop and manage a schedule of mission immersion events and create ad-hoc events as needed.
  • Organize the execution of mission immersion events through the operations teams in the field where the immersions will take place.*
  • Develop and implement immersion event standards, processes and procedures. *
  • Lead, manage and mentor contributing staff and volunteers.*
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree. CMP/CSEP preferred.
  • 10+ years progressively responsible work experience, including 5+ years in a supervisory capacity, in an event planning/management role, preferably managing events or programs with VIP attendees. Relevant experience in a non-profit, military, multicultural and/or global organization preferred.
  • Working knowledge of meetings/events management industry best practices, standards and ethics.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams. Ability to achieve desired results while working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
  • Working knowledge of basic business and accounting functions including project management and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  • Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. Working knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver’s license.
  • Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families.
