The Vice President, Direct Response is responsible for successfully achieving USO’s direct response/digital fundraising goals. This is accomplished through management and integration of several direct marketing channels and programs, developing and overseeing the implementation of strategies to optimize the returns garnered from all direct response/digital channels and programs, and the identification of new direct marketing revenue sources.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

  • Oversee all aspects of the Direct Response Fundraising program ensuring short and long term goals, acquisition targets, and budget objectives are achieved. *
  • Engage in ongoing forward-thinking assessment and analysis of market trends, emerging channels, and internal and external audiences to develop and implement new direct marketing revenue sources and strategies that drive sustainable incremental revenue. *
  • Leverage insights from campaign analytics and other statistical data to improve direct response/digital fundraising programs’ performance. *
  • Grow the monthly giving donor audience and revenue by overseeing the coordination and successful execution of strategies across existing marketing channels (including direct mail, digital, email, and telemarketing,) and through the development and implementation of new strategic initiatives and marketing channels. *
  • Oversee and ensure that all external strategic partners involved in the development and execution of direct response fundraising strategies and plans receive the appropriated direction, guidance, tools and information necessary to optimize their contributions in achieving the direct response fundraising programs short and long term goals. *
  • Build, promote, and direct data-driven business cases for increased or new investment in direct marketing channels. *
  • Ensure the procurement of print and production resources are effectively and efficiently managed to garner the greatest ROI from direct mail initiatives. *
  • Serve as a key stakeholder and contributor in the planning, development, and execution of Brand Transformation initiatives including the creation of direct marketing creative assets and audience engagement strategies. *
  • Work in close partnership with the Vice President, Marketing to ensure the Brand Transformation audience engagement initiatives are developed, implemented, and coordinated in a manner that complement the engagement strategies targeted to the existing core direct marketing audience so that the combined audience marketing efforts optimally drive increased brand awareness and revenue generation. *
  • Develop budgets and track expenditures for all direct response fundraising channels and programs. *
  • Lead and manage all direct response department team members. *

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 15+ years progressive work experience in a leadership or management role, including 7+ years in a supervisory capacity. Relevant experience in a direct response fundraising management role, including at least 5 years in middle or senior management. Relevant experience generating multi-million dollar revenues for a nonprofit preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of effective direct response, mid-level, sustainer fundraising techniques and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and lead high-performing teams. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and achieve desired results through others.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
  • Proficiency with developing long-term strategic direction and with business support functions (i.e. budget, planning, management) for a large enterprise or multiple business units.
  • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated strong integrity and ethical standards and practices.
  • Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. Working knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite and Raiser’s Edge.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver’s license.
  • Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families.
