 The Organization

USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore (USO-Metro) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization chartered by Congress, and dedicated to serving those who serve, and their families in Washington D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia. It is through the generous financial support of individuals and organizations in the local community that USO-Metro is able to fulfill its mission. With the help of thousands of devoted volunteers, USO-Metro provides programs and services for active duty troops and their families at area military hospitals, six USO Centers, four USO airport lounges and a Mobile USO. Signature programs and services include holiday programs like Turkeys for Troops and Project USO Elf, emergency housing and food assistance, and caring for our wounded, ill and injured troops and their caregivers.

Position Overview:

The Donor Development Manager will have primary responsibility for leading the organization's individual giving efforts, setting strategy for individual giving, and executing fundraising plans for sustaining and growing the number of annual donors, the size of individual donations, and converting annual donors to major donors. This is a new positon for USO-Metro so the chosen candidate must have strong organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to communicate and build the function’s role, while engendering enthusiastic internal and external support. Because of the nature of the work, some evening and weekend hours are required.

Responsibilities/Duties

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and implement strategies for solicitation that will grow annual revenue from individuals: manage all appeal campaigns, manage and monitor online giving initiatives, work collaboratively with other department areas to advance fundraising goals; meet with donors.
  • Oversee database management, gift processing, development and fulfillment of donor benefits, gift recognition donor correspondence, and mailings.
  • Partner with staff and the Special Events Manager to coordinate events logistics to ensure an exceptional donor experience, with a focus on cultivation and stewardship. Conceptualize and implement membership programs and small donor cultivation events.
  • Manage new donor prospecting, including: research, analysis of fit, and proposal/grant writing.
  • Work with Marketing & Communications team to develop strategies for Development presence in all communications and marketing. Oversee the Development presence on the website.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of donor communications. Prepare regular reports on all campaign activities.
  • Monitor revenue and expenses related to individual giving.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing or a related field.
  • Five to seven years successful experience in individual, major or planned gift fundraising.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and USO-Metro.
  • Demonstrated record of completing assignments.
  • Proven communications skills including experience in writing direct mail appeals, e-appeals, managing donor website, and social media communications.
  • Outgoing personality and ability to initiate and enjoy direct communication with donors and potential donors; customer-service orientation.
  • Highly motivated and energetic; History of taking the initiative and working well both independently and collaboratively.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, project coordination experience, and the ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff, as well as outside clients and vendors.
  • Ability to handle diverse, competing tasks, meet deadlines, and follow through.
  • Requires the ability to travel locally to military and partner program events in USO-Metro territory (Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia). Must have and maintain a good driving record.
  • Requires the ability to speak over the phone and in person, listen, and prepare professional written communication.
  • Must be able to operate standard office equipment including computer, copier, printer and mobile and desktop phones. Demonstrated proficiency with various computer software programs including Microsoft Office and a fundraising database.
  • Prior experience in a non-profit or military setting a plus.
  • Must be willing to travel throughout the DC metropolitan area and occasionally out of town.
