The Director, Monthly Giving & Donor Advancement leads the strategy, execution, and performance of USO’s monthly giving program, a core pillar of USO’s revenue portfolio that supports pipeline development, donor retention, and channel diversification. This role is responsible for acquiring new monthly donors, retaining existing monthly donors, and converting single gift donors to monthly donors through various mass market fundraising channels.
In addition, the Director is accountable for building and managing the organization’s mid-level strategy, ensuring alignment with enterprise revenue goals creating a donor advancement framework. The Director, Monthly Giving & Donor Advancement manages teammates and agency partners, builds integrated strategic roadmaps, and drives revenue growth with a focus on ROI, donor engagement, and long-term value.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)
Fundraising Strategy and Execution (40%)
- Develop and lead the execution of fundraising strategies to grow USO’s multimillion-dollar sustainer program through DRTV, digital fundraising, direct mail, and face-to-face canvassing, with a focus on maximizing long-term donor value and sustainable revenue growth.*
- Develop compelling copy and creative that will be used in DRTV campaigns.
- Identify and direct investments for new and existing programs designed to acquire, convert, retain, and recapture sustaining donors with the goal of making sustainers the centerpiece of USO’s donor population.
- Build and manage the organization’s Mid-Level giving strategy, including donor segmentation, engagement plans, personalized stewardship, and upgrade pathways designed to increase donor lifetime value.
- Manage a team of fundraising professionals, fostering their growth and performance through regular feedback, mentoring, and development opportunities.
- Partner with SVP, Direct Response, to develop annual revenue and expense planning, budgeting and monthly reforecasting for sustainer and mid-level efforts.
- Continuously evaluate and improve the monthly donor journey to ensure best practices are achieved through acknowledgments, conversion techniques, timing of upgrades, relationship building, and other USO touchpoints from other divisions in partnership with Direct Response, Major Gifts, Donor Services, and Development operations team.
- Utilize data, analytics, and donor insights to optimize campaign performance, improve retention and identify opportunities for revenue growth and donor migration.
- Serve as a strategic leader in building a scalable donor pipeline that supports the organization’s long-term fundraising growth and strengthens the transition of donors into transformational giving opportunities.
- Participate in relevant cross-departmental meetings to ensure sustainer campaigns and mid-level audiences are supported and integrated across the USO. Work closely with Major Gifts, Marketing, Communications, Legal, and Corporate.
- Participate in sustainer-focused fundraising industry groups/benchmarking in order to bring new ideas to the team and program.
- Manage celebrity and influencer recruitment in support of DRTV and donor advancement campaigns in collaboration with Entertainment team.
- Manage premium processes, including budgeting, approvals, fulfillment tracking, and campaign integration.
- Serve as USO’s internal expert and advocate for Monthly Giving & Donor Advancement fundraising, supporting education, cross-functional strategy, and innovation in DRTV, Face-to-Face Canvassing, mid-level and other initiatives, internally and externally
Vendor Management (30%)
- Select and manage external vendors and agencies for DRTV, Face-to-Face, and Donor Advancement programs. Lead RFPs and contract negotiations, oversee vendor invoice reconciliation, and ensure alignment with contract terms and budgets.
- Primary lead and project manager with agencies and vendors in developing go-to-market monthly giving and donor advancement strategies targeted to acquire and retain donors, convert donors to monthly donors, and advance donors to mid-level and major gifts.
- Ensure work quality and service levels provided by vendors and subcontractors meet expectations.
- Direct Statement of Work creation, amendment and extension periods, and manage contract processes.
- Ensure compliance to regulatory processes.
- Track invoices and ensure expenditures adhere to budget.
Budget, Investments and Management, Marketing Analysis and Performance Tracking (30%)
- Define and track key performance indicators for acquisition, conversion, and retention. Leverage analytics to inform decisions and maximize donor lifetime value.
- Partner with internal analysts and external vendors, including the Director, Budget & Donor Analytics, to implement advanced attribution and match-back models, and to maintain the tracking infrastructure that ensures accurate performance analysis and informs investment and campaign strategy.
- Monitor weekly and monthly channel performance, providing actionable insights and executive-level reporting. Adjust tactics based on donor behavior, revenue trends, and channel efficiency.
- Partner with SVP, Direct Response to develop annual revenue and expense planning for monthly giving and donor advancement programs. Review and approve each campaign budget and work with Finance to ensure all policies and procedures are met.
- Lead annual, quarterly, and monthly revenue forecasting, expense budgeting, and reforecasting in collaboration with the SVP, Direct Response.
- Develop insights from marketing research, data analytics and marketing analytics, and incorporate into fundraising strategy and tactics.
- Lead monthly accruals and revenue and expense reconciliation processes. Review and approve agency budget systems and input into USO systems for approvals
- Benchmark and assess campaign performance. Make recommendations. Present key findings and results to the Senior Leadership Team.

Job Specifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications or related field.
- 10+ years of work experience in a development or fundraising role with recent direct line management over a multimillion-dollar fundraising program in the commercial or charitable sectors, including 5+ years in a supervisory capacity.
- A strong working knowledge of monthly giving and/or subscription program best practices, data literacy, and comfort collaborating with diverse teams are essential for success in this position.
- Expertise in DRTV strategy, execution, media buying, and performance optimization using data.
- Expertise in Face-to-Face canvassing strategy, execution, and performance optimization using data.
- Multi year donor stewardship planning experience including retention and cultivations strategies, loyalty programs, mid-level programs, segmentation planning, revenue and expense modeling.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards governing direct mail, email, direct response television, telemarketing, and canvassing solicitation operations.
- Ability to lead and achieve desired results while working collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
- Working knowledge of basic business and accounting functions including project management and budgeting.
- Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to adapt quickly and easily to changing organizational needs.
- Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. Working knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver’s license.
